Abstract mix-media on paper. One of five works which comprise a series of abstract paintings I completed during a time of deep reflection on my years as a child during the time my parents separated and divorsed. In this particular period of my life I recall seeking solice in my tribe/community members — many of whom had succumb to the surge of the easily accessible street drug crack cocain.

The inspiration for this painting are the women at my elementary school I attended in the 1980 who would keep watch over us kids during recess. These women often wore many hats, performing multiple roles such as teaches, nurses, volunteers or parents of other students visiting for the day. The environment the I was raised in took great pride in our heritage of expeclence and so it was commonplace that children received lessons, instruction and guidance from any of the women in the neighborhood. In this work I poured the color, texture and rythm of the warming nurturing voice of the lunch lady who served in my elementary school cafeteria, who was the very first person I saw extenguish a fire without using water. She'd later explain to me that fire can't burn without air. Little did she know, she had turned on a my curiosity for science.

Around that same time our school had a free book givaway where I picked out a fourth grader's least likeliest choice of all — Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia of Science.

"Lunch Lady Taught Physics" is warming, vibrantly colorful and texturaly rich painting that is sure invigorate the energy of your colection and will revitalize your environment with array of late summer hues and engaging compositional.
